Town of Palm Beach to offer noise tests, certification for leaf blowers
Code enforcement staffers to set up testing site on Wednesday at Phipps Ocean Park for owners.

Saturday, November 17, 2007

Owners of leaf blowers will get the chance to test the noise level of their equipment during an event sponsored by the Palm Beach Police Department.

Code enforcement personnel will set up a leaf-blower noise-testing station Wednesday in the north parking lot of Phipps Ocean Park, 2145 S. Ocean Blvd.

The hours are from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m.

A town ordinance requires that leaf blowers should not be louder than a decibel level of 65 dBA as measured at 50 feet from the point of operation.

Equipment passing the noise-level test will be certified, and a Town of Palm Beach Police Department Certified Leaf Blower sticker will be attached to the blower.

Each certified leaf blower will be registered with the owner's name, address, telephone number and the serial number of the blower. This registration will help police recover stolen equipment and return it to its owner.

There is no charge for the noise testing. Lawn maintenance companies as well as residents of private homes and condominiums who use leaf blowers are eligible for the service.

Anyone unable to attend the testing session should call 227-7080 to make arrangements to have their leaf blowers certified.
