ASPEN, CO - 18 JULY 2005 - Effective July, 25, 2005, the City of Aspen Environmental Health staff will start conducting daily surveillance throughout town to enforce the City wide ban on gas powered leaf blowers.

“The City is receiving numerous complaints about the use of these leaf blowers in the commercial and residential areas,” said Senior Environmental Health Specialist, Jannette Murison. The out-right ban has been in effect since April, 2003, when City Council approved the revisions to the existing noise ordinance.

City staff has sent numerous letters to landscapers and property managers reminding them of the ban. Since citizen complaints are still being received, active enforcement is necessary to reach compliance with this issue. Murison suggests landscapers and property managers replace gas-powered leaf blowers with electric leaf blowers or simply use an old fashioned broom.

“When possible, use a broom. It will save energy and reduce fugitive dust,” reminds Murison.

Enforcement consists of tickets being issued, potentially up to $500, with a possible mandatory court appearance.
